february persists

“Love the winter. Don’t betray it. Be loyal.

When the spring gets here, love it too—and then the summer.

But be loyal to the winter, all the way through—all the way, and with sincerity—or you’ll find yourself high and dry, longing for a spring that’s a long way off, and winter will have abandoned you, and in her place you’ll have cabin fever, the worst.
The colder it gets, the more you’ve got to love it.”

– Rick Bass, Winter: Notes from Montana

tuesday night it rained and then froze. the landscape has become an inhospitable ice rink and going out to collect wood has become a little bit more of an adventure. the sun came out briefly to showcase some of the lingering ice, but then clouds rolled over the sky, the wind picked up, and february became cold and hostile again. more snow is in the forecast this weekend. keep on doing your thing, winter! i can handle it.
