solstice2015-0415-13………………

april has been a particularly wintery this year. the feet upon feet of snow we got this winter has been slow to melt, especially in the woods around our cabin. we have so many hemlocks that provide a good deal of shade and the forest stays much cooler even on warm days. the past couple days were really a breakthrough, though. our “yard” has finally started to appear!

these photos are from this past weekend and the one before. we spent some time at our neighbor/landlord’s sugar house stoking the fire and talkin’ maple sugar on Easter. there’s nothing sweeter than freshly made maple sugar!

this past weekend we finally got stir crazy and went for a hike up phoebe’s nable, a nearby small peak. the parking lot was not open all winter and with the amount of snow we had, there was no way we could park on the street and block the road. well, the lot still had a hefty amount of slushy snow in it, but we made it through anyway. the short trail up the mountain still had about of foot of snow on the ground much of the way. it was a bit of a challenge going up (plus i forgot my gaters), but tromping down was much more fun! Solstice seems so grown-up now and enjoyed his “first hike” up a mountain. can’t wait to do more of this now that Spring is finally here!
