to me there is nothing better than waking up in the summer time and throwing on a sweater. maybe i just love sweaters too much, or maybe i’m just a tried and true new englander. i love the cool breezes that whistle through the leaves. i love sitting on our porch with a blanket over my lap and a hot cup of coffee in my hand while i listen to the chickadees hopping through the hemlocks and loons calling as they fly overhead.
this weather makes our morning walks with Solstice SO much more pleasant, too. we are not being swarmed by deer flies anymore, nor have mosquitoes given us much of a bother. the woods are quieter, but they are still full of life. i saw a peeper making its way across the trail, probably finding a good spot to hang out in the woodlands near a vernal pool. i only just learned that it takes two or three months for a new peeper to metamorphose into land-dwelling adult frogs.
i also love that while we are still surrounded by the lush green of summer, hints of fall are starting to arrive. we have been busy processing wood to prepare for another long winter as well as painting the exterior of our cabin. i haven’t taken more than two days off work this summer (and those were for the 4th of july and a doctor’s appt.), so as much as i will try to savor this august, i’m looking forward to catching a breather once september is here!
